Mater Dei Hospital Shows Excellence in Emergency Response in the Wake of the 18th April 2025 Gwanda Train Accident
Mater Dei Hospital, a beacon of humane and professional care, was recently called to offer emergency medical care to victims from the train accident near Gwanda involving a luxury train and a goods locomotive.
In the accident, 7 crew members were injured with varying degrees of severity of injuries. The victims were triaged at Gwanda Hospital and the severe and critically injured were transported to Mater Dei Hospital for further specialist emergency medical care. The hospital deployed its trauma response team to handle the multi-faceted polytrauma patients received. Our competent team of medical practitioners, nurses, and support staff stood tall in response, providing top-quality multi-disciplinary care around the clock.
Through the concerted efforts of our multi-discipline teams, all except one of those patients were treated and discharged successfully. Unfortunately, despite the best of all expert efforts and interventions in a complex medical situation, one patient sadly lost his life due to complications from multiple injuries from the accident. A grim reminder of the severity and unpredictability of traumatic injury. We offered our condolences to the family and loved ones of the victim as we continue to pray for the dearly departed.
During and throughout the treatment processes, Mater Dei Hospital stayed committed to its core value of patient-centric care. The commitment did not go amiss. Our Medical Director, Mr A Macheka received compliments of appreciation from key stakeholders including companies representatives, our Resident Minister and families of the accident victims.
